How Long does the healing phase take after getting dental implants?

It may take some time for the healing after getting the dental implants as it is a multiple-step procedure. In certain cases, you might need more than one healing stage. The time taken for the healing process can vary depending upon the patient’s health, how many teeth have been replaced, and other factors. Afraid this may be too long of a wait for you? We have more options for you. See Whether to choose Dental Implants or Veneers to replace a broken tooth?.

Read the below-given steps that are required to be taken care of between the procedure time and the recovery in order to get a healthy set of teeth.

  • If grafting of the bone was required during the procedure, then the first stage of the healing process may take from four to six months. Bone grafting is only done when the patient does not have a healthy bone to support the implants to be placed.
  • In case bone grafting wasn’t required, but the teeth were extracted, it still needs some time for the gum to get healed. Nowadays, to save the patient from the double healing time after extraction and again after the procedure, they have found a new technique. In it, the doctors put the implants at the same time they extract the teeth. Before the suturing of the gums, the orthodontist will place a cap onto the dental implant. It may take about a week to heal from this procedure if you are healthy.
  • After a time period of four to six months, the second surgery is then performed. Until that time, the implant metal should have fused inside the gums. The cap is then exposed and the region around the gum is then sutured. The gum around the cap heals and takes the shape of the cap.
  • Once the process of Osseo-Integration is completed and the gum is completely healed, the cap is then safe to remove and an abutment will be attached, where the artificial teeth or denture can be placed.

 What is Osseo-Integration?

The process of strengthening and supporting the implants is known as Osseo-Integration. After the implant structure is inserted into the bone, the bone grows naturally over the implants building a strong bond that strengthens the implants. The process usually takes a period of two to six months for completion of Osseo-Integration.

  • With the use of pain medication and moist heat, the healing time can be shortened.
  • Use a brush having soft bristles so that you do not damage the sutures.
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash to kill the growth of bacteria.
  • After the procedure, prefer eating foods that are soft and avoid any strenuous physical activity.
  • Use warm salt water to rinse your mouth at least 4-5 times daily.
  • After the healing is completed, regularly maintain oral hygiene by brushing at least twice and flossing once a day.
  • Regularly schedule a routine cleaning and examining the teeth.
