It is very important to maintain good oral health. The mouth is a sensitive component of the body. If the root canal therapy you have been subjected to is yet to be completed and a permanent crown or filling still needs to be put in place, you are supposed to minimize chewing on the tooth that is being repaired. It is normal to feel sensitivity for a couple of days in the area where the procedure was done. This happens because of the inflammation of natural tissue. But don’t worry, this minimal pain and discomfort can be controlled through over the counter medications. Most patients are able to go back to regular activities within 24 hours.

Pain Relief:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which is obtainable over the counter, such as Ibuprofen may be taken if the tooth is painful.
  • If the patient is NSAID or Aspirin sensitive, Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can instead be used.
  • If the pain is persistent, prescription medication has to be used. The likelihood that there is a remnant infection must be examined.

Infection:

The likelihood of infection following a successful procedure is very rare. But, in case there is suspicion that an infection is taking place:

  • The patient may be given antibiotics to get rid of the remnant infection.
  • The root canal is likely to be reopened, cleansed, and re-sealed during the repeat procedure.

There are some patients that feel ok to drive themselves after the root canal procedure. However, this is a case by case scenario. The amount of sedative used for the procedure is also taken into consideration when driving yourself after the procedure. It is probably advisable to let someone else drive you home. However, if your tooth hurts, and regardless of any excruciating toothache that you are suffering from, that is definitely going to stop.
